(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. S.P. "J. A. Garfield", likely as President-elect, 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" b/w, a chest, up pose as Senator, boldly signed at bottom. Backstamp by Harroun, New York. Creased at top, traversing the top of Garfield's head, lightly soiled. Accompanied by an A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Charlotte, Mi., Nov. 5, 1880 written by a 13 year-old boy who apparently received this photo, to the candidate: "...I must congratulate you on the success of the Republican party in electing you as our next President...I am a Republican and all my Ancestors as far back as we can trace are Republicans too. And if I was a man I would surely have voted for you. I hope you will have as good success as you did in fighting the rebels on the Big Sandy...". Also included is an envelope with period handwriting "Lewie's letter to J. A. Garfield Nov. 3: 1880 in Charlotte Received answer Dec. 10. 1880.". Three pieces.
