Description:

JAMES A. GARFIELD
(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. Civil War-date A.L.S. as Representative, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 7, 1865, to Montgomery C. Meigs, quartermaster general. In part: "...On referring to the letter from Capt. J. D. Stubbs which I did not have with me when I called on you this P.M. I find he has sent an application through Gen. Donaldson to you, which has probably reached your office by this time. I hope he may be transferred to Ohio if possible...". At the time of this letter, Meigs was in charge of reopening Sherman's supply lines. Meigs sometimes referred to as "the master of efficiency", was the logical choice for Garfield's appeal. Gen. James L. Donaldson was a brevetted quartermaster general best remembered for his logical acuity and success in managing the supply chain for Grant and Sherman. Handsomely set into a tan mat and housed in a carved wood frame. Very good condition.
