Description:

JAMES A. GARFIELD AND FOUR MORE UNION GENERALS
Fine and very rare Union war-date document 2pp. 4to., Chattanooga, Oct. 16, 1863 bearing the signatures of Union Brigadier Gen. and future president James A. Garfield, as well as four additional Union generals. The first page is comprised of an A.L.S. of Brig Gen. WILLIAM B. HAZEN (1819-1875), 4th A.C., Chattanooga, Oct. 16, 1863 to Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. Hazen recommends Capt. Henry W. Jackson be appointed Asst. Quartermaster, noting: '...I have never known him out of his place, either in camp, on the march, or in the fight...' On the integral leaf, Major Gen. WILLIAM S. ROSECRANS (1819-1898) endorses the document, forwarding it. Beneath appears an A.E.S. of Brig. Gen. JAMES A. GARFIELD (1831-1881) in Washington who writes: 'I do not know - in the whole Army of the Cumberland - a more worthy officer than Capt. Johnson. I hope he may be appointed...' There follows an A.E.S. Of Brig. Gen. THOMAS J. WOOD (1823-1906) who forwards the letter, approved, with a finals signed endorsement from Chattanooga, that of Major Gen. GORDON GRANGER (1821-1876), who also approved and forwards Hazen's letter. With engraving. Fine condition. The army was at this time in Chattanooga, under siege by Bragg. Rosecrans who be sacked four days later and replaced by Major Gen. George H. Thomas. Garfield had returned to Washington and was near the end of his military service. Oddly, he has signed as a brigadier general, though he had been promoted to major general almost a month earlier.
