(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. A.L.S. 'J. A. Garfield' as U.S. Representative, 1p. 8vo., Mentor, Oct. 19, 1879, to his brother THOMAS GARFIELD (1822-1910). In part: '...Your letter...came to hand when I was in the midst of our campaign. I passed through New Castle last Tuesday and wanted to stop, but I was engaged to speak at Erie...I have managed to provide for my October payment and can get along for the present. I hope your business will so prosper that you can help me when my payment of April next comes. I have always had faith in your success & do not doubt the final issue...' Fine condition. Thomas, the older brother, and James were inseparable. Thomas supported their mother and James before and during the Civil War. He would die bankrupt on a foreclosed property.
