Description:

JAMES A. GARFIELD PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN LETTER
Fine 1880 Garfield presidential election printed circular, 1p. 4to., issued by the Pro-Garfield electors during the heated 1880 presidential election in which Winfield Scott Hancock waged a "Bloody Shirt" campaign against rival James A. Garfield. In this circular, issued in Brooklyn, Oct. 29, 1880, Garfield supporters declared that Democrat Hancock was in favor of "a tariff for revenue only" which meant that Hancock and his party were not sympathetic to the plight of the American worker. Industrial workers in the North would suffer under Hancock''s economic plan. Their labor would not be commensurate with those of the laborers in England. Garfield''s team declared: "...in reference to our Customs laws, a policy should be pursued which will enable the labor and capital employed in our great industries to compete fairly in our markets with the labor and capital of foreign producers." The agreement worked and by electoral votes Garfield easily won the presidency, but not by the popular vote. Also included is a printed ballot listing New York''s "Electors of President and Vice-President." Included in the list is Lincoln Secretary of State William H. Seward''s nephew, Clarence A. Seward who served as a lieutenant colonel during the Civil War. The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
