Description:

(1887 - 1979) American army general and commander of army forces in North Africa, also led the landings in southern France. Lot of two T.L.S.'s "Jake" on Army letterheads, 2pp. total 4to., Washington, Fort Monroe, Va., 1947-48, to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In one letter, Devers praises Huebner, declaring: "...in a very few months you have raised the standards from the very low...to the very highest...you are given full credit...our soldiers are real representatives of the country...we are trying to do a better job and are fighting to keep the thirteen weeks' training we all know is so necessary to start a soldier on the right path...Reenlist as many as you can We are doing a better job on this than before..." In the second letter, Devers thanks Huebner for obtaining posts for a local museum. File holes in margins, else fine. With carbon copies of Huebner's associated letters as well.
