Description:

(1813 - 1867) Union brigadier general who led forces at Ft. Donelson and Shiloh. War-date A.E.S. at the conclusion of a good content A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Corinth, Mississippi, May 2, 1862, penned by Commanding Captain of the 3rd Iowa Bluth[?]. In part: ‘...commission appointing Lieut. O'Neill...opened by me, as temporary Commandant of the Regiment...Lieut. O'Neill was taken prisoner – consequently was not delivered to him, and is not in my possession...considering the present scarcity of commissioned officers with this Regiment, and the great importance when possible of each company having a captain in a campaign...respectfully suggesting...withdrawing the commission of Lieut. O'Neill and appointing Lieut. Crawford to that position. Unless this is done, it is most probably that Company A will continue to remain without a captain for a long time, if not to the end of the war. Lieut. Crawford has been in active service over ten months and has taken part in all the actions in which the Regiment has been engaged – at Monroe...Blue Mills and Shiloh...which he was wounded...nearly fit for duty. He possesses the entire confidence of the company as shown by the company election in which he received 54 votes for captain...' At the conclusion, Lauman states he personally knows Crawford and offers his ‘cheerful endorsement'. Signing and forwarding on the verso is STEPHEN HURLBUT (1815-1882) Union major general, the only one to have been born in South Carolina. Later was a founding member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veteran's organization for those who served in the Civil War, and a diplomat. Very good.
