258. ANDREW JACKSON Unusual manuscript D.S. as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 27, 1835 to Daniel Kurtz at the "Indian Office". In part: "You are hereby appointed to perform the duties of Commissioner of Indian Affairs during the absence of that Officer..." Boldly signed at bottom. Light show-through in from two old tape repairs on verso, slightly worn folds, else very good. Andrew Jackson was a forceful proponent of Indian removal. From 1814 to 1824, he was instrumental in negotiating nine out of eleven treaties which divested the southern tribes of their eastern lands in exchange for lands in the west and under Jackson, Kurtz strongly advocated the Wyandottes removal to reservations in Oklahoma. $1,000-1,500
