Description:

JACK RUBY (1911 - 1967) Dallas nightclub owner who shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald following Oswald's assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Jack Ruby's large glass and leather combination lighter and ashtray, kept on his desk at The Carousel, the strip club owned by Ruby in Dallas. The 8 1/2" diameter ashtray has a hard brown leather-covered exterior with gilt printed filigree trim. Fitted within is a sturdy glass ashtray with a leather-covered brass lighter at center. The lighter, made by "JET", requires some repair. The ashtray is accompanied by a 2013 letter of provenance from noted Kennedy collector Erik L. Dorr, curator of the Gettysburg Museum of History. He notes that this pieces was obtained by collector Robert L. White directly from Earl Ruby, Jack Ruby's brother in about 1994. Also present are two pages of color printouts of various photos of Jack Ruby's brother, Earl Ruby, seated with Robert L. White and signing letters of provenance at the time White purchased this ashtray and other items from Ruby. White's credibility as a collector is excellent: he inherited many hundreds of items from Kennedy's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, and many of these were sold by Guernsey's auction ca. 2005. Dorr's letter further states that this piece has been deaccessioned from the museum, and the original museum display tag is included.
