Description:

JACK KIRBY
(1917-1994) American illustrator and a legend in comics, he co-created major characters such as Captain America, the Black Panther, Hulk, Iron Man, and many others. Two hand-drawn comic panels from 'The Last Days of Pompeii' from Classics Illustrated #35 HRN 161 Story Page 4 Original Art (Gilberton, 1961), a side project with Dick Ayers that chronicled the final moments of the doomed city just before the volcanic fury of Mount Vesuvius sealed its fate. Drawn the same year Kirby co-created the 'Fantastic Four', 'The Last Days of Pompeii' is a historic blend of drama and Silver Age energy. Twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12 in. x 6.5 in. The left panel is affixed over a previous drawing. Light toning, toned art paste-up in left panel, glue residue and minor handling wear. Still very good, accompanied by a copy of an explanatory letter from the Kirby Museum.
