Description:

(1896–1987) American major general, served in both the Pacific and European Theaters. Collins commanded the VII Corps in the Allied invasion of Normandy and on the Western Front through to the end of World War II in Europe. Fine content war-date T.L.S. as commander of VII Corps on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Dec. 9, 1944 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Collins writes as both commanders face stiff German resistance in the Hurtgen Forest. In part: “…I have just completed a survey of the area through which the 1st Division fought…the Hamich Ridge, the northern end of the Hurtgen Forest…I am again filled with admiration for the gallantry and dauntless spirit of your great division. The German positions through this area were cleverly sited, were defended with rare tenacity and backed up by more artillery than the VII Corps had encountered to date. The enemy tanks still strewn over the battlefield…and the number of enemy dead are mute but convincing testimony of the remarkable achievement of the 1st Division…” Very good. The 1st Infantry was attached to VII Corps at this time – seven days later, it would be attached to V Corps.
