(1896-1987) American major general, served in both the Pacific and European Theaters. Collins commanded the VII Corps in the Allied invasion of Normandy and on the Western Front through to the end of World War II in Europe. Fine content and association T.L.S."Joe" on Army Chief of Staff letterhead, 2pp. 4to., [Washington],Nov. 30, 1950 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Collins lauds his old comrade in arms upon Huebner's retirement from the Army, in part:"...you have occupied every grade from private soldier to general officer...all earned by top-flight service...In the two World Wars you demonstrated superb leadership in commands ranging from a battalion to an army corps. The early promise of distinguished service at Cantigny and Soissons in 1918 was amply fulfilled...at Utah [actually, Omaha] Beach, the St. Lo breakthrough, Aachen, the Hurtgen [sic] Forest...you always looked after the welfare of your men...objectives...were always taken..." Collins concludes reflecting on Huebner's occupation service and wishes for his friend's continued success. Very good.
