Description:

Good pair of signed items from controversial FBI Director J. EDGAR HOOVER (1895 - 1972) and his Associate Director and supposed lover CLYDE TOLSON (1900 - 1975), related to the collection of George Zagrofos, catering manager of the St. Moritz Hotel, and his wife Marie, who became close friends to Hoover and Tolson after meeting them at numerous hotel events. The lot includes: Signed guestbook, 10 x 7.5 in., likely taken from an event held at the St. Moritz Hotel, with red leather covers and gilt title, containing three complete pages and one partial page of signatures, the first signature being 'J. Edgar Hoover'. Hoover adds 'FBI' under 'Address', next to the date 'May 23rd, 1948' and the remarks 'It's Tops!'. Remaining signatures unknown to us, yet given that the hotel's events often held 'Lords and Barons' - as suggested via a newspaper clipping included in this lot - other notable signatures may be present. Disbound, damage and soiling to the front cover, yet interior pages remain very good. WITH: S.P. from CLYDE TOLSON, 9 x 11.75 in. b/w, showing Tolson in a chest-up view in a suit, inscribed at bottom: 'To Marie Griffith...with kindest regards... April-1940...Clyde Tolson'. Likely removed from previous frame, leaving slight indented border around the image, slight crease at bottom-left, neither affecting the image or inscription. Still very good condition. Sold with a full-color cartoon, 8.5 x 8.5 in. (sight), showing Zagrafos, Hoover, and Tolson at a barbecue, as Zagrafos hands them a plate with the speech bubble '-Now you have all their fingerprints', matted with a pertinent newspaper clipping and framed to a total size of 19.25 x 12 in. Frame a bit loose, else very good. Three pieces.
