J. E. B. STUART AND WADE HAMPTON
An outstanding war-date document signed by two of the most distinguished cavalry generals to serve in the conflict, JAMES E. B. STUART and WADE HAMPTON, additionally endorsed by JAMES T. HART, captain of the distinguished "Hart's battery" of flying artillery attached to Hampton's Legion, and by WALTER H. TAYLOR, lieutenant colonel and Robert E. Lee's closest staff officer. The document , 1p. oblong 8vo., was issued at Barnwell Court House [SC], Feb. 11, 1864, is a "Certificate Recommending Extension of Furlough" issued to Cpl. C. W. Stewart of Hart's Battery who had originally been issued a furlough the previous January 14th. In this case, Stewart is granted an additional thirty days leave as the three surgeons who have examined him (who have also signed) have found: "...he is suffering from Gun shot wound of Hip...". On the verso the documented is endorsed by four of the Confederacy's most prominent officers, in order: JAMES T. HART, an A.E.S. "Arty Camp Feby. 24th 1864 Resp Retd. Approved Jas. T. Hart Capt. Comdg". Beneath appears an E.S. by WADE HAMPTON "Hd. Qrs. Hamptons Cav. Div. Feby. 24, 1864" approving and forwarding the furlough; followed by an E.S. by J.E.B. STUART "Hd. Qrs. Cav. Corps. A.N.V. Feb. 26, 1864" also approving and forwarding the document; and finally bearing an E.S. WALTER H. TAYLOR once again approving and forwarding the request. Taylor's signature is a bit light, typical light toning and some scattered minor foxing, else very good.
