Description:

Rarely seen pair of German passports ('Reisepasses') issued to Austrians Simon Moses and his wife Eugenie Moses, each bearing a large, red 'J' on the first page indicating their Jewish religious affiliation. Simon had been born in a suburbm of Berlin in 1894, Eugenie in Berlin five years later. Both of their photographs remain attached to their passports, which were issued at their cities of birth two weeks apart on Oct. 1 and Sep. 15, 1938 respectively. It is evident from the placement of the visa stamps that both visited the German authorities and foreign consulates together at the same time. Both obtained visas to transit through the U.K. to Australia on Oct. 7, 1938 and on Oct. 9 visited German tax authorities at which time they likely were forced to surrender their savings. The apparently traveled aboard the SS Empress of Britain to England on Oct. 15th, but their voyage was delayed and their passports were not stamped in Croydon until Nov. 19. On Jan. 7, 1939 they received non-immigrant visas in Halifax, and on Feb. 10, 1939 they arrived in Sydney, Australia where they were also initially admitted as non-immigrants. A portion of one page bearing revenue stamps has been cut from Eugenie's passport, otherwise very good. These passports are very late for Jewish emigrants, as by this time persecution of Jews in Germany and Austria was overwhelming.
