Description:

IWO JIMA OFFICER'S PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
Photograph album of Army G-2 Col. H. E. FOWLER who served on the staff of Gen. JAMES E. CHANEY (1885-1967), theater commander in Europe from January 8 to June 20, 1942 when he was replaced by Eisenhower. Chaney was given command of Army forces for the Battle of Iwo Jima from November 1944 until July 1945. As commander of Iwo Jima from March 1945, he commanded all United States Forces on the island. The album opens with about 85 photographs from the start of Fowler's military career, specifically his service in World War I and probably with the 7th Field Artillery, his fellow soldiers, and also including photographs of family members, an estate he visited, etc. The balance of the album covers Fowler's World War II service, about 125+ photographs, most 8 x 10 in., showing almost exclusively scenes from Iwo Jima. The first twelve images show British, American and native soldiers on parade in New Zealand, and about 30 images showing Chaney receiving an award or promotion, group photos of officers, and portraits of Fowler. The balance of the album, about 70 photographs, are about evenly split between images of Chaney, staff members, and other officers on the scene in Iwo Jima, and great images of the scene on Iwo Jima during the battle, about half being original, half being Signal Corps prints, This section includes a signed portrait of Chaney inscribed to Fowler, dated 'Iwo Jima July 1945'; eight fantastic aerial bombing and reconnaissance photos of Chidori Airfield, Suribachi, beaches, etc. before, during and after extensive bombardment; wrecked Japanese aircraft, shore batteries and armor; landing craft and an LST approaching shore; a fuel dump, smashed AMTRACs; wounded Marines; the captured airstrip; officers and men in field fortifications, etc. Overall near fine.
