Description:

(IWO JIMA FLAG RAISERS) JOHN H. BRADLEY
(1923 - 1994) Navy corpsman awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima. During the battle, he was a member of the patrol that captured the top of Mount Suribachi and raised the first U.S. flag there on February 23, 1945. Bradley was generally known as being one of the men who raised the second flag on Mount Suribachi as depicted in the iconic photograph by Joe Rosenthal. On June 23, 2016, the Marine Corps announced publicly that Bradley was not in the photograph. Fine content A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 28, 1954, to Major Ralph Wray, involved in the dedication of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington which includes a statue representation of Rosenthal's photograph. In part: '...Thank you for your kind invitation for me and Mrs. Bradley to attend the dedication of the [Marine Corps War] Memorial. I checked on the airplane fare...Round trip Milwaukee Wis to Washington & return, this amount is for one person. Mrs. Bradley will be coming also...' Folds, light uneven toning, staple holes at the top, and some ink calculations beneath signature, else very good. Bradley had actively participated in the raising of the first, smaller flag atop Mount Suribachi, and one may speculate that he had initially confused the two events...and was obliged to continue the misrepresentation following his wartime rise to fame.
