IWO JIMA AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS (9)
Fine lot of nine pre-invasion aerial photographs of Iwo Jima. Three 9 x 9.25 in. photos show a Jan. 4-5 aerial bombardment of coastal sections of the island with bomb craters visible on the shore with the other images, the same size, show Mount Suribachi and Motoyama Airfield No. 1. Three smaller images, 6 x 6 in., show sunken Japanese barges near the shore, Nov. 27, 1944. Fine condition. Prior to the Battle of Iwo Jima, air attacks on the island were part of a sustained campaign of bombardment by the U.S. Navy and Army Air Forces, starting in June 1944. These attacks, combined with naval shelling, aimed to soften up the Japanese defenses and prepare the island for invasion. The intensity of the pre-invasion air and naval bombardment of Iwo Jima was the longest and most intense of the Pacific Theater. From the estate of Army G-2 Col. H. E. FOWLER who served on the staff of Gen. JAMES E. CHANEY (1885-1967), theater commander in Europe from January 8 to June 20, 1942 when he was replaced by Eisenhower. Chaney was given command of Army forces for the Battle of Iwo Jima from November 1944 until July 1945. As commander of Iwo Jima from March 1945, he commanded all United States Forces on the island.
