Description:

ISLE OF JERSEY POPULATION IS WARNED ON D-DAY
Rare imprint, 8" x 12", Isle of Jersey, June 6, 1944, the very day the Allies landed on the beaches at Normandy, a broadside warning the population of the German-occupied British island of Germany to avoid any acts of sabotage under pain of death. Signed in type by an "Oberst. HEINE", it is written in German and English and reads in part: "...Germany's enemy is on the point of attacking French soil...I expect the population of Jersey to keep its head...refrain from any acts of sabotage and from hostile acts...At the first signs of unrest or trouble I will close the streets...and secure hostages. Attacks against the German Forces will be punished by death...". Clean one inch tears at top and bottom margins, one fold, else near fine. The Channel Islands were occupied without bloodshed in 1940, and were held by Germany even after the recapture of France. From June to December 1944 the German garrison and the native population were cut off from all supplies when a Red Cross ship was finally allowed to land with needed supplies for the starving soldiers and civilians. The islands were not liberated until after the surrender of Germany in May 1945.
