ISAAC LOW
(1735 - 1791) American Revolution merchant and politician from New York, the first to sign the Articles of Association (Apr. 29, 1775) when he gave an impassioned speech against the King and Parliament. Low was a delegate to the first Continental Congress, yet was against independence. Arrested for treason in 1776, he was protected in New York by Carleton until he fled to England at War''s end, losing all of his properties here. Fine association A.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., New York, June 12, 1764, a receipt issued to Royal Navy captain ARCHIBALD KENNEDY, then captain of the HMS Coventry, guaranteeing the security of 35 pounds paid for "shore hire". General wear and slight toning at folds, else boldly penned and very good. While commanding the Coventry only a few months later, in November, Kennedy would refuse to take aboard tax stamps threatened with destruction during the widespread American protests of the Stamp Act. Fearing the safety of his own property in the city, Kennedy would actually close the port of New York until the contentious issue was resolved.
