ISAAC F. SHEPARD
(1816-1889) Union colonel, brevetted brigadier general after the war. Shepard served as assistant adjutant general under Nathaniel Lyon, was wounded at Wilson's Creek, and led the Africa Brigade at Vicksburg. Rare A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., ‘Hankow', Mar. 24, 1883, on letterhead of the Consulate of the United States for Hankow, Kiukang and Ichang to his daughter Ella. He writes a touching message, in small part: ‘…I shall not write you a very long letter just now, for I am not very well…About three weeks ago I was taken with vertigo, followed by intense head ache, and at intervals, vomiting. I called in Dr. Begg, who said there was some heart trouble…from a low system and mental overwork...Today he told me no cause for alarm, but I must not expect complete recovery…So you need not be too anxious…I was delighted with your ‘Christmas at home'…Thank you, too, for ‘Little Red Riding Hood' which pleases me very much, as well as the ‘Farmer's Almanac'…Now my dear, dear love…a…blessing from your ever affe't father…'. Fine.
