ISAAC F. QUINBY
(1821-1891) Union Brevetted Brigadier General, fought at Bull Run, captured Fort Pillow, and led assaults on Vicksburg. War-date A.L.S. ‘I. F. Quinby Brig Genl U.S. Vols', 2pp. 4to., Columbus, KY, May 22, 1862. Just ten days before Quinby would capture Fort Pillow, he writes to Senator Ira Harris. In part: ‘…May I ask you…why Mr. Rochester, my Assistant Adjutant General, has not been sent to me. It is now more than a month since I was notified…that his nomination had been made, and I knew that he and his friends are beginning to feel a little uncomfortable…I know not of a single objection that can be urged against Mr. Rochester…being a high minded gentleman and…as a Regimental Quartermaster under me he proved himself an intelligent and most efficient officer. Will you add to the numerous and great favors you have conferred upon me by seeing that my friend is duly appointed…I have been assigned by Major General Halleck to the command of the District of the Mississippi…and I am especially charged with the construction and armament of the river defenses….'. Henry Halleck (1815-1872) was Union major general and Lincoln's General in Chief and adviser. He proved to be an effective administrator during the war until replaced by Grant. Very good to fine.
