Description:

IRISH POTATO FAMINE
A.L.S from an unidentified writer from England, 3pp. legal folio, July 16, 1847, to William Davidson in New York, interesting content re: his sentiments about moving to America (negative) and the terrible plight of the Irish at home. In part, "…you speak about the great diversity of opinion that exists concerning America. I don't wonder if it being so there will be as great a difference of the situation they are placed in…whither good or bad especially in a strange country and I have no doubt but there are some who formed a very high opinion of it at home may carry it out to a certain length there even in a middling situation but when people go so far and so great an expense with a design to make themselves better and it turns out otherwise it will be very provoking for some time. I think the advantages gained there will never compensate for what is lost here…that is if a family is not in a situation where they have bread and the other comforts of life…if we know the comforts of life in a moderate way there's no place like home…I do not wonder in the least at so many families not having Bibles in their houses among such a mixed multitude of people from different countries. This summer we have had upward of a hundred Irish people camped on the Roman road for the purpose of gathering wool…they are in a poor condition lean and dirty beyond expression…carrying their dead and laying them down in a farmers outhouse…" The Irish Potato Famine occurred between 1845 and 1852. Approximately one million people died of starvation and another one million people emigrated, many to America. Some soiling and small tears at folds, otherwise very good condition.
