Description:

IRA C. EAKER
(1896 - 1987) American Air Force General and Commander of the Eighth Air Force, the architect of a strategic bombing force that ultimately numbered forty groups of sixty heavy bombers each. T.L.S. on personal letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington D.C., November 1, 1968, to Cadet Louis E. Burton answering questions and discussing the role of the Air Force. In part: '...the operations of the 8th Air Force out of England...were primary in winning the air battle in Europe...without which there could have been no successful invasion of the Continent...In World War II the air victory had to be primary. It was not possible to conduct successful sea and land operations without first winning air superiority. The best historical example of this, in the world at any time, is the fact that when General Eisenhower and his great effort crossed the Channel on June 6th, the Luftwaffe had been so decimated and beaten down that they were unable to oppose it. If General Eisenhower had not had our Air Force, there could never have been the possibility of a successful land invasion from Britain to France...' At the conclusion, Eaker mentions several associates who influenced his career, including H.H. Arnold and Carl A. Spaatz. File holes at margins, else fine condition.
