INSIGNIA, AWARDS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS OF BLACK K.I.A. PFC JOHN H. MCRAE
Grouping of material related to the service and death in action of PFC John H. McRae, Co. B. 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Div., born 1943 and killed by enemy ground fire in Kotum Province, South Vietnam, Nov. 11, 1967. Included is: McRae's Bronze Star with 'V' device, the fourth highest military decoration for valor, named to McRae on the reverse, along with chest ribbon and lapel pin; his Bronze Star award certificate issued Dec. 25, 1967, a bit soiled; a small portrait photo of McRae in uniform; U.S. and Infantry collar pins; infantry scarf; marksmanship pin; name plate; DUI pin; brass belt buckle; two green Army name tags; black wallet; and social security card. Other documents and photos present include: Republic of Vietnam printed document with translation, 8pp. legal folio, (Saigon), Jan. 17, 1968, signed in type by President Nguyen Van Thieu, being lists of American soldiers, including McRae, killed in action and to be awarded the Military Merit Medal; five letters sent to McRae (three from his wife),returned to senders as undeliverable due to his death; an Army official list of his possessions at the time of his death, programs from his funeral in Florida; and five more photographs, his children and two images of his widow accepting his posthumous Purple Heart. McRae had been married but two months at the time of his death. McRae's division was undertaking border surveillance at the junction of the borders of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam when he was killed.
