Description:

INDIAN SPEARHEAD FROM THE CUSTER BATTLEFIELD
Rare, large iron spearhead recovered from the scene of the destruction of Gen. George A. Custer, and his entire immediate command along the banks of the Little Big Horn River in Montana on June 25, 1876. The spearhead measures 13.5 in. long overall, its blade alone being 7.25 in. long. Affixed to it is a ca. 1900 paper label with contemporary handwriting providing provenance: 'Lance Head Found May 22, 1913 Custer Massacre Site Little Bighorn Montana' and initialed by the finder, as indicated on the label with 'M.M.M.' (Miller M. Masters). The lance head is wired onto a wood and newspaper backing coated with sand (for visual effect) and set into a period Black Forest style wood frame. The frame is backed with a sheet of newspaper from a period newspaper from Polson, Montana, located about 40 miles north of Missoula. This Indian weapon, very rarely found in this large size, accompanied a larger collection of Custer Battlefield relics which were presumably found by the same 'souvenir hunter' in 1876.
