Description:

INDIAN RIGHTS ASSOCIATION ESSAYS
Good pair of nineteenth-century printed essays, both written by founding members of the Indian Rights Association, an influential Philadelphia activist group dedicated to the well-being of Native Americans. Includes: "Four Weeks Among Some of the Sioux Tribes of Dakota and Nebraska, Together With a Brief Consideration of the Indian Problem", by Herbert Welsh (Philadelphia: Horace F. McCann), 1882, 31pp. 8vo., a narrative of the author's encounters with Sioux tribes both living within the reservation system, and not yet constrained by it. The essay also mentions meeting members of Sitting Bull's tribe, and the author's thoughts on how best to treat Native Americans to assure their assimilation. WITH: "Impressions of The Sioux Tribes in 1882, With Some First Principles in the Indian Question", by Henry S. Pancoast (Philadelphia: Franklin Printing House), 1883, 27pp., presenting further impressions of the above-described trip to the Dakotas, with further thoughts on the place of native Americans within white American society. The author would shortly thereafter co-found the Indian Rights Association with Welsh and several others. Both imprints bear several detached pages, with file holes and markings showing that they were deaccessed from the library of the University of Pennsylvania. Else very good.
