Rare mounted albumen photograph, "Indian Chiefs", by John C. Grabill. The 9" x 7" photo bears the caption in the plate: "INDIAN CHIEFS Who counciled with Gen. [Nelson A.] Miles and settled the Indian War..." The caption also identifies those present, who are passing a peace pipe among themselves. They include: Standing Bull, Bear Who Looks Back Running [Stands and Looks Back], Has the Big White Horse, White Tail, Liver [Living] Bear, Little Thunder, Bull Dog, High Hawk, Lame, and Eagle Pipe. Mounted to a page from a 2nd Iowa Volunteers publication, with several interior chips, a corner chip, paper clip indents, a numerical stamp at upper-right, and some waviness. Worthy of restoration, and estimated accordingly. This photo was taken at or near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the immediate aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre which, for all intents and purposes, ended the Indian Wars. JOHN C. H. GRABILL (1849-1903) was a prominent western photographer most remembered for his important images of the early Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Sioux Indians, and the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
