Description:

Rare and very desirable oversize cabinet photograph, "Indian Chiefs and U.S. Officials" by John C. Grabill. The 8 1/2" x 5 1/8" photo bears Grabill's name, the date Jan. 16, 1891 and a list of those appearing in the image, all in the plate. They include: William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Two Strike, Crow Dog, Short Bull, High Hawk, Two Lance, Kicking Bear, Good Voice, Thunder Hawk, Rocky Bear, Young Man Afraid of His Horse, American Horse, Maj. J. M. Burk, J. C. Craiger, J. McDonald, and J. G. Worth. The Lakota chiefs in the photo (Brulé, Miniconjou, and Oglala) met with the officials at the Pine Ridge Reservation only 18 days after the infamous massacre at Wounded Knee, ostensibly to further clear the way to a more solid peace between the whites and Indians on and off the reservation. Cody, who had failed to bring Sitting Bull to the table before Wounded Knee, was still thought to be an important mediator in the talks. Two or three figures have had their outlines slightly enhanced in nearly-indiscernible pencil, with some light foxing to the top of the mount, else very good. JOHN C. H. GRABIL (1849-1903) was a prominent western photographer most remembered for his important images of the early Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the Sioux Indians, and the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
