INDEPENDENT RIFLES An interesting A.L.S. written on behalf of the Independent Rifles, later the 13th Regt. Maryland Vols., 1p. legal folio, Frederick County, Oct. 2, 1860. Six months prior to the start of the war, the Rifles request from the County Commissioners the use of their city's Court Building as part of an Armory. In part: "...The officers and members of the Independent Rifles, a military organization of the City of Frederick, would humbly pray your Honourable Body, to grant unto them, the use of the room in the second story of the Court Building heretofore occupied by them, as an armory...".
