A good early nineteenth-century manuscript United States Consul circular, 2pp. 4to., written by GEORGE W. ERVING (1771-1850) Consul to London from 1801-1804 under Thomas Jefferson, London, Jan. 29, 1802, to the Collector of the Port of Baltimore. In part: "...The ship Mary, Thomas Temple master freighted by me for the purpose of carrying to the United States a number of our unfortunate countrymen lately discharged from the British Navy, was obliged…to put into Falmouth by the stress of weather, where a fever having broken out, she has…been detained in quarantine; several of the passengers have died…I think it proper to give you this information in order that if the Mary may happen to arrive at Baltimore, you may take…precautions as you may deem proper to guard against the introduction of the disorder…". Irregular left margins, else very good condition.
