Description:

"IMPERIALISM IS THE CHINESE PEOPLE''S ENEMY" WITH DEPICTION OF KENNEDY
Large, well-illustrated Chinese political poster, "Imperialism is Chinese People''s Enemy" (Guangdong: Political Department of Gunangdong Military Region), April 1963, 21 1/4" x 31", featuring 24 b/w political cartoons, criticizing American involvement in Asia, with particular emphasis on the Boxer Rebellion, their support of Taiwan, and the violence that has been visited on the Chinese people as a result of American involvement. The U.S. is personified here as Uncle Sam, and is in several panels depicted with facial features reminiscent of those used in anti-Semitic propaganda. The most interesting illustration depicts American president JOHN F. KENNEDY (1917-1963) astride a flaming U-2 spyplane over China, with the caption: "On 1962. 9.9., America dispatched a U-2 plane to East China to steal information. The plane was shot down by our air force. This reveals America''s lie about bringing peace to China." This particular incident never took place, but likely references the Soviet capture of FRANCIS GARY POWERS (1929-1977), whose U-2 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in 1960, sparking a diplomatic crisis between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Minor soiling, else very good to fine.
