Description:

Pre-World War II cocked dress hat of an officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, approx. 15" x 6", constructed of black beaver fur trimmed with black brocade. Each end is fitted with a tassel of gold bullion and violet thread, while the side bears two coils of bullion, on gold an one silver, secured with a brass button depicting a chrysanthemum symbol over an anchor, all backed with a black silk cockade. The interior is fitted with a black leather sweatband and thin cord chin strap, and is lined with white silk, embroidered inside the crown with three Japanese characters in faded red thread. The hat shows one or two minor losses to the fur surface at the edges, with one bullion finger loose at the front tassel, and with some wear and soiling to the interior, else very good. The hat is housed in a black-painted tin case with wire loops handles and a hinged clasp at top, lined inside with red velvet. This early style of case dates the hat to the Russo-Japanese War or World War I eras. It is unmarked, and shows some dents to the exterior with very slight resultant paint loss, else very good.
