Description:

IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY FLEET REVIEW PANORAMIC PHOTO
A very attractive original panoramic photograph, 60 x 8 in. b/w, almost certainly depicting the Imperial Japanese Navy's 16th Fleet Review off Yokohama on August 25, 1933. The review featured 161 vessels the majority of which can be seen in this image, taken from a vantage point on a warship's mast. At center appears the battleship HIEI, the flagship of Emperor Hirohito during the review, escorted by two MYOKO-class heavy cruisers and two other unidentified cruisers as she sails between two columns of warships, including, from left to right: the battleship MUTSU; the aircraft carriers RYUJO, KAGA and HOSHO; a FUSO-class battleship; the battleship HYUGA; and the battleship NAGATO. Many additional warships, including two KUMA-class light cruisers, destroyers, transports and oilers are visible in the background. The photo is captioned in the plate in kanji at upper right, untranslated by us. Rolled, shows some folds overall and chips and small tears to the edges, else in very good condition. Needless to say, almost all of the ships visible in this image would be sunk by Allied forces or lost to other means during World War II.
