Description:

IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY COVERALLS, ATTRIBUTED TO A SHINYO SUICIDE BOAT PILOT
A pair of World War II Imperial Japanese Navy coveralls, constructed of light olive green cotton and closed at front with nine tortoiseshell-pattern celluloid buttons in two sizes. A flap-covered patch pocket is fitted at each breast, with an internal slit pocket at each hip. A square tag of white celluloid is sewn to the right-hand breast pocket, bearing the name ‘Liuetenant Takahashi' in Kanji. The left-hand shoulder bears a sewn-on patch depicting a screen printed ‘kikusui', or floating chrysanthemum symbol, beneath two bars. This symbol is commonly associated with Japanese suicide initiatives at the close of World War II, including kamikaze, kaiten manned torpedo and shinyo suicide boat forces, but was also utilized by regular aviation units and religious and patriotic civilian organizations. The coveralls originate from the same estate as other shinyo-attributed items in this sale. Shows some soiling overall, with buttons for adjustment straps missing from one cuff and one pant leg and with two holes to the seat, otherwise in very good condition.
