Description:

Comprehensive collection of approx. 40 pieces if Imperial Japanese Navy cloth insignia, sixteen pieces of Imperial Japanese Army rank insignia, and sixteen Japanese military uniform buttons and other metal insignia, all collected as souvenirs by a veteran. These insignia are affixed to four period textiles, with the naval insignia displayed on a white cotton scarf displaying a clamp-dyed black anchor flanked by two rows of chevrons, and on a khaki silk handkerchief. The naval insignia present here includes: an Imperial Japanese Navy cap tally; shoulder insignia for the ranks of regular seaman, able seaman, and petty officer and chief petty officer; two embroidered bullion cap badges worn by civilian advisors attached to the IJN; two wool gunnery trial uniform patches; good conduct stripes; and others not identified by us. The army insignia is affixed to a second silk handkerchief, and consists of various rank collar tabs, with a shoulder strap at center bearing an aviation related-badge, unidentified by us. The final textile, a square section of parachute silk, bears several uniform buttons and shoulder insignia "pips" in the form of cherry blossoms, an unidentified IJN badge, an army helmet star, and a wooden tablet inscribed with Japanese characters. Two metal-backed ribbon bars, one showing black thread indicating that it was once sewn to the above display, are also present. Each of the four textiles bears a manila tag at the corner identifying the owner: "Property of Sgt. Ray Fernwood 2900 Cosgrove Ave. Oakland 3. Calif." A fine collection overall, perfect for display and certainly worthy of further research.
