Description:

(IMPEACHMENT OF SAMUEL CHASE)
Fine content manuscript D.S. "Jno Smith, Marshal" 1p. 4to., [Philadelphia, n.d., but ca. late January 1805], a certification that "… served the annexed Subpoena, on Jared Ingersol, on the Nineteenth, William S. Biddle and Samuel Ewing, on the twenty third, and on William Rawle, on the twenty fourth of January last past, by Shewing them the original, and delivering them respectively, a true Copy of the Same. - Thomas Carpenter, Stenographer, not to be found in my District." On the verso, the marshal has listed the names of the individuals under subpoena together with an additional A.E.S. by Smith, the U.S. Marshal responsible for the District of Pennsylvania. The men in question were compelled to give testimony in the Senate trial of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase. Jefferson's allies in the House impeached Justice after he made comments in open court in 1803 denouncing Republican efforts to terminate federal Judges appointed by Adams in the closing days of his administration. In late 1804 the House charged Chase with eight articles of impeachment. Both Biddle and Rawle were questioned in the Senate trial on February 11, 1805. Ewing would be examined and cross examined - Rawle too would be subject to additional questions that day. Ultimately the Senate voted to acquit Chase and to this day he stands as the only Supreme Court Justice to be impeached and tried by Congress. Usual folds with minor partial separations, minor loss at one corner, else very good.
