IMMIGRANT TO AMERICA TELLS OF BEING STRANDED AMONG INDIANS
Fine content A.L.S. on illustrated letterhead showing the city of Cincinnati, 4pp. 4to., Cincinnati, Apr. 21, 1844 in which Jonas and Hannah Bandsley write to their parents in England for the first time since they arrived in America. In part: "...We landed in Philadelphia, and went to the New England states...I had not an opportunity of getting much work there, we left for Cleveland. Not having success there, we came to the western country, where we still remain...we worked on a stem boat...I am now my own master...we went one trip up the Red River, three hundred miles further than any other boat went before, right up amongst the Choctaw, Cherokee and other indian tribes. While up there our boat was wrecked...we had not means of getting back...but by means of indian canoes, incamping at night in the woods...crocodiles, alligators, bloodsuckers, vampires, and other dangers...in the woods were bears, wolves &c but the most nearly ate us up were the musquitoes...George took bad of the billious fever...it is desperate hard work to get hold of money...Hannah has got many of the Yankee way; she is obliged to have the floor carpeted to save her hurting her knees by cleaning. She has little to do but rock herself in the chair...". Folds and somewhat soiled, still quite good.
