Description:

ILLINOIS ENLISTEE: "I HAVE ENLISTED TO FIGHT FOR HONEST ABE THE DAMNED OLD SCOUNDREL"
Civil War letter of Richard R. Dingman, 4pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Aug. 17, 1862, a week after he enlisted in the 10th Illinois Cavalry. Dingman writes a lady friend on a letterhead picturing a foppish Southern gentleman with the caption: "THE SOUTHERNER AS HE WAS". In part: "...I am going to start for Arkansas...I have enlisted to fight for honest Abe the damned old scoundrel that I wish was in hell...the time has come for me to rally...do not wait for me to marry you for I may never get back...when you think you have a good charmer to marry, you had better do it..." With cover, very good.
