Description:

Excessively rare "wehrpass" issued to Stutthof SS camp guard Johann Liebig, born 1907 in Essen and described as a Catholic. Liebig's duty is confirmed by his name and date of birth data maintained by the Stutthof museum archives. Stamps within include one showing Liebig's service from July 14, 1944, onward (end date not entered) with II-SS-Wachbataillon KL Stutthof ["II-SS Guard Battalion, Concentration Camp Stutthof"], which was established the previous June 29th. Prior to that date, it was called "Wehrmachts-Ausbildungs-Bataillon". Liebig also served in a guard unit, probably at Stutthof as well, from June 27, 1944 until July 16th. An entry on p. 26 shows that Liebig received training in espionage, sabotage, military secrecy, etc. in September, 1943 as well. Very good condition. Stutthof was the first Nazi camp set up outside German borders in World War II, in operation from Sep. 2, 1939. It was also the last camp liberated by the Allies on May 9, 1945. It is estimated that 65,000 prisoners at Stutthof and its subcamps died as a result of murder, epidemics, extreme labor conditions, evacuations, and lack of medical help.
