Description:

IDENTIFIED SS OFFICER'S DRESS DAGGER
A very fine SS dress dagger owned by SS-Sturmmann Willi Herd, SS No. 60 852. Dagger is 13.5 in. overall, with a 8.5 in. blade, black hardwood handle, and a painted black steel scabbard with hangers. The grip features the SS logo button at the top and the national eagle with swastika just below it, both well fitted. The pommel nut is crisp and clean, and the wood grip shows very light wear with minor chip to bottom right at cross guard. Lower cross guard is marked with Herd's SS number ‘60852', slightly overlapping the district 'III' mark, The blade is etched with the motto ‘Meine Ehre Heist Treue', and is marked with the logo for 'Robert Klaas, Solingen', showing the 'crossed cranes' motif. Blade has high shine, which suggests, due to the fine condition of the dagger and scabbard, that the original owner may have had it polished as the overall condition shows no reason for any type of restoration to have taken place. Blade showing minor running marks to both sides from repeated scabbard withdrawal. Scabbard is in fine condition, with original black paint fully intact and in near perfect condition, with only a chip or two to the sides edges. Plated fittings show minor scratches and wear, showing on the top fitting and throat, as well as the bottom fitting and ball, which also shows a dent to the bottom and one on left side. Leather hanger in decent condition, with functional clasp bearing RZM mark and ‘M5/71', as well as ‘OLC' in a diamond logo, and an accompanying 'D' ring fitted leather belt attachment loop. Original owner Willy Herd (b. 1915) joined the NSDAP on April 1, 1933. A portfolio of documentation compiled by Ross Kelbaugh, Military Research Service, accompanies this dagger and includes copies of Herd's NSDAP membership card, his name on the list of SS-Sturmmann rank holders, and his image. Excellent example. It should be noted that research only extends to about 1937, so a fuller examination of Herd's records would be beneficial.
