Description:

SS dagger with scabbard and hanger, 8.25 in. blade, 13.5 in. overall, manufactured by the firm of Robert Klaas of Solingen. The grip has lost a good deal of its original black dye due to wear, leving the wood dark brown. The grip further shows a crack to the obverse at the pommel, and an approx. 0.25 in. sq. chip to the reverse, with dings and handling marks overall, but the inset eagle and SS button remain in good condition. The nickled pommel and crossguard have been polished and the wood of the grip is slightly proud by comparison, with the crossguard also slightly offset from the grip. The owner's SS membership number, "18172", appears on the obverse of the crossguard, with the district mark "I" on the reverse. This membership number identifies the dagger to SS-Unterscharfuhrer Karl Stachelhaus of the town of Mettmann, who joined both the NSDAP and the Allgemeine-SS in 1931 as a member of 2. Sturm/20.SS-Standarte "Fritz Weitzel". The blade bears the engraved motto "Meine Ehre heisst Treue" on the obverse, with the Robert Klaas maker's mark on the reverse ricasso. The extreme tip has been broken and reground, and the blade shows run marks on both sides, else very good. The scabbard has lost more than 75% of its painted finish, with the exposed metal underneath showing oxidation. The nickled throat and drag have been polished, and the tip of the drag shows a dent and some deformation. The brown leather hanger shows expected wear, else very good. A portfolio of modern copies of documents related to Karl Stachelhaus is included.
