Description:

IDENTIFIED KAMIKAZE PILOT GROUPING (3)
An astounding collection of three items identified to a Japanese 'kamikaze' or suicide pilot from a veteran's 50+ year old collection, including the pilot's handmade headband, body flag, and pilot's wings. We start with the 13.5 x 9 in. silk Japanese national flag with one corner tie remaining, this 'good luck' flag bearing a good deal of ink kanji writing. The previous owner went to some trouble to have it deciphered, his translation offering a great deal of information on the owner of the flag: '1. Prayer from the Temple of Ehara Hachiman-ga for Good Fortune. 2. Prayer from the Temple of Bairku Hachiman-ga for Protection. 3. Prayer from the Temple of Hachimangu-u. 4. Name of Island (Palau) His unit 301st and 201st Hikotaki. Date Sept 20, 1944. Both these units were Kamikaze. (Shikishima-Tai); The first in the Phillipines and outer islands. 5. Name and Address: Takao Hasimoto; Okayama-Ken; Atetsu-gun; Mikara-Mura; Shodayokomichi (Japan)' Pilot Hasimoto (more likely 'Hashimoto') also composed a sad poetic reflection on his condition at the time: '6. Here I am in the South Pacific Ocean where it has turned into a place of intense battle and death. Our Emperor's Army has lost the chance to show our power. We are frozen in time. The flavor of the smoke from my cigarette reminds me of my homeland. I'm laying down with my head on my pillow and looking up at the dead moon. I am trying to dream about my home.' WITH: Hashimoto's 'kamikaze' headband, tri-folded silk cloth 36 x 4 in. when folded, a red circle sewn to front and the Japanese word 'Divine Wind', representative of the kamikaze credo, hand inked on either side of the circle; WITH: Hashimoto's officer's pilot's wings, silver and gold bullion applied to a blue-gray cloth backing, 3.25 in. wide. A truly important historical grouping.
