Description:

IDENTIFIED CANADIAN FLYING OFFICER'S MEMORIAL CROSS
A fine World War II-era example of a Canadian Memorial Cross, awarded to the next-of-kin of a member of the Canadian Armed Forces who perished during active service. The medal consists of a 1.25 in. silver Greek cross, with a laurel wreath running between the arms and the royal cipher of King George VI at center, and with the top arm displaying a crown and the remaining arms a Canadian maple leaf. The medal is suspended from a 13 in. purple silk neck ribbon. The reverse of this example is hallmarked ‘Sterling' with a boxed ‘R', for manufacturer Roden Bros. The reverse is further inscribed with the name of the soldier it memorializes: ‘F. O. W. J. Gilmore', with his serial number ‘J37870'. Flying Officer William James Gilmore was a bombardier aboard Handley-Page Halifax bomber serial NP711 of RCAF 408th Squadron, which was shot down during a night bombing raid against the railway station at Worms, Germany, on February 21, 1945, with the loss of the entire crew. The medal is housed in a black leatherette presentation case, itself withing a paperboard box, and includes a presentation card from the Canadian Minister of National Defence for Air. The medal is in fine condition, with the packaging showing expected wear.
