Description:

HUNTING BLOCKADE RUNNERS OFF GALVESTON
RICHARD W, MEADE III (1837-1897) American rear admiral, participated in the suppression of the July 1863 New York Draft Riots, plus active combat and blockade enforcement work while commanding the Mississippi River ironclad Louisville in the latter part of 1862 and the gunboats Marblehead in South Carolina waters in 1863–1864 and Chocura in the Gulf of Mexico during 1864–1865. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 6pp. 4to., aboard the USS Chocura 'off Calcasew river, La.', Jan. 31, 1865, to 'My dear Admiral', most likely his relative Adm. Hiram Paulding. In small part: '...we are in most wretched condition - we can carry only 18 pounds pressure...Commo. Palmer has ordered Emmons to send the ship to New Orleans...He left us here in a crippled ship alone...the Granite City, in trying to get into Galveston...was chased ashore...and is a total wreck...The Wave went out with a load of bunker...has either probably gone to Davy Jones or has been captured by one of our cruisers...'. He then describes a raid headed near Galveston: '...I left the ship with two boats and started in...the ship was anchored in 13 or 14 feet of water...we soon struck her - grappled - boarded and carried her with very little resistance...put the crew in irons...behold! the schooner fast on the flats!...commenced to lighten [ie: throw cargo overboard]...rapid current and winds drifted this cotton far out to sea and we picked up 31 bales...our prize is the Delfina...she burned two days and the rebels got not an article out of her...'. Much more fine content! Very good, with two original photo portraits ca. 1880s.
