Description:

(b. 1911) German liaison to the Royal Hungarian Third Army, ended the war as the Deputy Chief of Staff of Army Group South. T.L.S. 'Bang' on Army Group South letterhead, 1p. 4to., 'in the field', Feb. 7, 1945, a friendly letter to Commander of the 3rd Hungarian Army Jozsef Vitez Heszlenyi (1890-1945) shortly after Bang's transfer. In part: 'Dear Colonel-General...The reason why you have up to now heard nothing from me is simply that I was plunged here straightaway up to my neck in the hustle of an army group. I should not...fail in expressing my sincerest thanks to you for everything which I received from and through the 3rd Royal Hungarian Army, when I was head of the German liaison staff with it...I can only nurture the single hope that, after the expiry of these two months, I can return to my old post...' Light folds, else fine. Bang would never return to the 3rd Hungarian Army, and Heszlenyi would be sent to a POW camp in the Soviet Union after his capture on May 8, 1945 (V-E Day). In captivity, he would commit suicide after slashing his wrists with a razor blade.
