Description:

HUGO ECKENER AND ERNST LEHMANN
(1868-1954) German engineer and aviator, president of the Zeppelin Company, builder of the Graf Zeppelin which successfully circled the earth. His later project, the Hindenburg airship, burst into flames killing 34 people. A Sieger 170v real-photo postcard flown on the airship 'Graf Zeppelin' Switzerland flight, Aug. 18, 1932, bearing an image of the craft in flight over a river. Beneath a note from the sender, Eckener signs 'H. Eckener', along with three other signatories including ERNST LEHMANN (1886-1937), German Zeppelin captain, one of the most famous and experienced figures in German airship travel although he was criticized by Hugo Eckener for often making dangerous maneuvers that compromised the ship. He was senior officer aboard the Hindenburg when the ship caught fire at Lakehurst on 6 May 1937, and he died the following day. Lehmann signs in pencil at bottom, with two other signatures also in pencil, not identified by us. The sender has penned a note across the image on recto, slight ink smudging to Eckener's signature, overall very good.
