HUGH DOWDING
(1882 - 1970) Royal Air Force officer. Dowding was Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, and is generally credited with playing a crucial role in Britain's defense, and hence, the defeat of Hitler's plan to invade Britain. He was unwillingly replaced in November 1940. Rare A.L.S. with excellent association, 2pp. sm. 12mo., Wimbledon, July 12, 1949, a friendly letter to 'Lord Beavenbrook', MAX AITKEN, 1ST BARON BEAVERBROOK, Churchill's Minister of Aircraft Production and owner of the highly-influential 'Daily Express'. In part: '...Thank you so much for sending such a lordly ham...I was sitting by Beverley Baxter at a City Dinner last month, he said he was a great friend of yours...I saw Max: about Battle of Britain time. We had a very good reunion at Stanmore this year...' Four file holes, else fine condition. SIR MAX AITKEN, 2ND BARONET (1910-1985), Beaverbrook's son, was a Canadian-British flying ace of the Second World War, and BEVERLEY BAXTER (1891-1964) was a British journalist and member of Parliament, who took over as editor-in-chief of the 'Daily Express' after Beaverbrook.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
