Description:

HUGH DE SELINCOURT
(1878-1951) English author and journalist, best known for his descriptions of cricket and village life. A.Ms.S., 1p. 4to., Sussex, March 12, 1825, an excerpt from his novel "Young Mischief", in full: "Joan speaks - A Man want to be free and ought to be free. I don''t mean loose, any more than I mean that good women are necessarily jealous... I do so want you to go on telling Oliver that he must always be free. If he isn''t free and himself how can I go on loving him? Some men are so noble that they give and give and give until there''s nothing left but an exasperating shadow of nobility for a poor woman to care for." De Selincourt and his wife Janet practiced an open marriage for much of their lives, with de Selincourt forging a relationship with writer and birth control advocate MARGARET SANGER (1879-1966). The sheet shows folds and is ragged at the left edge were removed from a notebook, with slight toning to the edges, else very good.
