425. JULIA WARD HOWE (1819-1910) American writer and reformer whose stirring "Battle Hymn of the Republic" rallied Union sentiment. A.Ms., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], an original page of manuscript from one of her works, numbered "13" at upper-right, in part: "...to make it more & more an organ of womanly thought...women of the community to aid us with their time, with their purse. As in all of our work, we are aided by intelligent & liberal men, we need not say how valuable their assistance has already been... reform is sought in the name of one half only of the human race...The ignorance of women entails the ignorance of children..." The manuscript is bound into the first of two volumes (present) of a biography of Howe: Julia Ward Howe 1819-1910, by Laura E. Richards, Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston and New York, 1915, first edition, both volumes in fine condition, with worn slipcase. $300-500
